Information & Legalisation
When you wish to use official documents issued abroad in the Netherlands, for example for applications to the Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND), municipalities or other authorities, the documents often need to be translated correctly and legalised.
Sworn translation
A sworn translation is produced by a translator who is registered in the Dutch Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (Rbtv) and has taken an oath before a Dutch court. The translation includes the translator’s stamp, signature and declaration confirming its accuracy and completeness.
For documents in Dutch, English, French or German, a sworn translation is usually sufficient.
Legalisation and apostille
Depending on the country in which your document was issued and its intended use in the Netherlands, the original document and/or the translation may need to be legalised.
- For countries that are parties to the Apostille Convention, an apostille is sufficient.
- Other countries require a more extensive legalisation procedure.
Please note: when a document has been translated by a sworn translator in the Netherlands, further legalisation of the translation is usually not required.
Common documents requiring a sworn translation
- Birth certificate
- Marriage certificate
- Divorce certificate
- Death certificate
- Diplomas and transcripts
- Certificate of unmarried status
- Residence permit
- Notarial documents
- Contracts
- Financial documents
Legalisation procedure
- Have the original document legalised in its country of issue.
- Have the legalised document translated by a sworn translator in the Netherlands.
- Check whether the translation requires any further legalisation.
